On Thursday, Geno and I went to the funeral of his paternal grandmother. It was a wonderful ceremony. I know that isn't exactly what comes to mind for most when you talk about a funeral, but it really was. She was a beautiful, kind, caring, generous woman-and the best cook I have ever met! We lived just down from them for about a year, and Christopher LOVED stopping by their house. He would always come away with a soda and some kind of homemade treat! She made the best "karo nut pie" I have ever tasted! I always looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas when she would make those.
I think that most of all, though, it was a wonderful ceremony because it was an opportunity for family to get together when they might not otherwise. She was survived by one sister and another lady who was raised with her just like a sister, one son, one daughter, 5 grandsons, 1 granddaughter, 9 great grandsons, 3 great granddaughters, and 1 great great grandson. How awesome is that? All because two people fell in love.
This brings me to my reason for the title. I can't say that I was sad for Mema's passing since she has been going through quite an ordeal for the last several months. She looked so peaceful and so much better that it was hard not to be happy for her to not have to go through this anymore. I was very sad for those she left behind-especially her husband of 60 years. That is such a long time to spend with someone and such a milestone today! After we had a meal at the church, I asked Papa Church how he was doing. He said surprisingly well. I told him that I thought she looked good and he said, "I thought she looked beautiful." That reminded me of something my good friend, Missie, told me her mom said after reading/watching "The Notebook". She said that every woman should be loved like that.
I want to be loved like that.
